The Duke (12A) @ Studland Village Hall #1

The Duke (12A) @ Studland Village Hall

Director: Roger Michel
Starring: Jim Broadbent, Helen Mirren, Anna Maxwell Martin
Biography Comedy Drama
UK 2020 1 hr 35 mins

A 60-year-old taxi driver from the North East, travelling to the National Gallery in London to steal a Goya painting, as part of his crusade for social justice, might seem a far fetched subject for a film. But it happened in 1961, when Kempton Bunton carried off the daring theft of a portrait of The Duke, which he then kept in his wardrobe, as police launched a huge manhunt for what they believed was a professional gang of art thieves. Jim Broadbent is superb in the main role, ably supported by an unrecognisable Helen Mirren as the shocked, but ultimately supportive wife. Court scenes of Bunton being tried for theft are brilliant, with his honest, witty evidence reducing the public gallery, and lawyers, to tears of joy – just as audiences will be.
