Petite Maman (U) – Bridport Electric Palace
Petite Maman (U)
Director: Céline Sciamma
Starring: Josephine Sanz, Gabrielle Sanz.
Drama Fantasy | France 2021
1 hr 12 mins | Subtitles
Like her earlier and much acclaimed Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019), Céline Sciamma’s beautiful Petite Maman focuses on girls and women, in this case mothers and daughters. We enter the film following the death of Nelly’s grandmother and we see the world through the eyes of the young girl, Nelly. Time moves slowly and events unfurl both naturally and magically. The film is a “wonderful reminder of….the fact…. that we forget a lot of things when we grow up” (R.Ebert). Filmed in lockdown, this delicate film, resembling an exquisite miniature, demonstrates the possibilities of great story-telling even working with huge constraints and surely testifies to Sciamma’s place as one of the greatest film makers of today.
Nominated at Bafta and Berlin Film Festival, plus 6 other awards.
Purbeck Film Festival is delighted to be invited to screen a selection of its films in the elegant art deco cinema, Electric Palace in Bridport. We are now excited to work with a new Dorset partner. On November 5th we offer a French double bill, Petite Maman, directed by Céline Sciamma of Portrait of a Lady on Fire fame, and La Famille Bélier, directed by Eric Lartigau. This film describes the French original story of the hearing daughter of deaf parents which was adapted to make CODA. We look forward to making new friends amongst the film lovers of Bridport.
