“Persian Lessons” is a film set during the Second World War in a German concentration camp. Gilles (Nahuel Pérez Biscayart) is a Belgian Jew who pretends to be half Persian to avoid death. Gilles tells the deputy commandant that he had a mother from Belgium and a father from Iran. The deputy commandant is intrigued and asks to be taught Persian, but Gilles is lying and he cannot really speak the language. Gilles therefore must invent a convincing fake language to teach the deputy Commandant in order to survive. This scenario is kept alive and credible by the impressive performances of the two central characters and the tension that their relationship creates, and the theme of the resourceful Jew and the opportunistic Nazi is seen in a wholly fresh manner. This Russian/ Belarus feature is original and thought provoking.
