French Night: La Famille Bélier (12A)

La Famille Bélier (12A)
Director: Eric Lartigau
Starring: Karin Viard, Francois Damiens.
Comedy Drama Music | France 2014
1 hr 46 mins | Subtitles

A girl who lives with her deaf parents realises she has a gift for singing.
This is a very busy and boisterous film, made with pace and nonchalance by experienced comedy director Eric Lartigau. When the film opened in France it was a runaway hit – with more than 7.5 million admissions. The obligatory American remake, CODA, went on to win the 2022 Best Picture Oscar but many felt the idiosyncrasies were ironed out somewhat.
This French original  has enormous charm and humour, a real sense of warmth within the family, and a knockout finale which, of course, involves singing.
