Can the India’s space programme help alleviate India’s poverty? This is the central question posed in this endearing and heart -warming documentary. As the scientists in Mumbai tackle the immense challenges of constructing a satellite that will fly into a black hole the neighbouring children of the slums have dreams of their own. The juxtaposition of these two dramatically different communities is affectionately created in Sue Sudbury’s film and watching a truck carry the satellite on India’s chaotic motorway system is a perfect metaphor of the type of problem that India has to overcome.
We are delighted to welcome Sue Sudbury, the director of the film, to introduce it and provide a Q & A session afterwards.
Sue works as a documentary filmmaker and academic in the Media Faculty at Bournemouth University. Sue’s first film A Day in May about the day a million women in 25 different countries demonstrated for peace was screened at the London, Sydney, Leipzig and Nyon Film Festivals. Sue went on to direct for Channel 4 Moving Out which won the RTS Educational Award, A Home for Clare which won the New York International Film and Television Finalist Award and The Tale of Bugs Bottom which won the Prix de Basle. Sue more recently made two award-winning shorts, Village Tales, a participatory film with four women filmmakers in rural India and Hunger by the Sea, an animation set in a Dorset food bank. Indian Space Dreams is her first feature documentary.
