Claimed by many to be their favourite foreign language film, this 1988 masterpiece by Guiseppe Tornatore hits every emotional button whilst revelling in cinematic nostalgia. Cinema Paradiso is a charming drama about friendship, childhood, and the magic of cinema. Tornatore’s Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Film follows a filmmaker recalling his childhood and adolescence as he falls in love with the world of cinema in his native Sicilian town. It follows the deep friendship he forms with the cinema’s projectionist. This movie is a celebration of film intertwined with nostalgia and a great deal of humour, and the film’s emotions are intensified by Ennio Morricone’s powerful score. The incomparable concluding scene will lift the most dormant of hearts – truly groundbreaking.
