THE UK’S LONGEST RUNNING RURAL FILM FESTIVAL

WELCOME!!!

We’re back and we have missed you.

Welcome back to the Film Festival after a sad year away. 2019 was our best ever festival with great audiences, wonderful films and exciting guests.

In 2021 we plan to bring you an equally thrilling range of 65 films from all over the world – well, from at least 16 countries, showcasing the very best of cinema.

ABOUT US

We shall be hosting events in 22 venues, five of which are new: The Mowlem, Knoll House Hotel, the Water Tower Swanage, Morden Village Hall and Nusara Restaurant, Poole. Welcome to them.

Emerging themes include: Celebrating great Artists, the creativity of animators, talented women in film, honouring elders, and social justice. There are also some old friends, which the BFI calls Festival Darlings.

OUR STORY

The Purbeck Film Festival has been running for 24 years and we are the longest running rural film festival in the UK. We are a charity and are run almost entirely by a team of fantastic and dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to bring you an amazing programme of films each summer and autumn that you may not otherwise get a chance to see on the big screen.

The main Purbeck Film Festival is an annual event that runs every autumn during the last two weeks of October. Look out for our handy FILM GUIDE which will be out soon listing our autumn programme.

OUR HISTORY

We first began in 1996, when the idea of a festival took off as an initiative with Purbeck District Heritage & Tourism to increase tourism outside of the main season and to celebrate 100 years of cinema. The idea was to put on a small festival of locally based films, and in the first year the Rex Cinema in Wareham was involved alongside the Mowlem Theatre in Swanage and a small number of village halls, including Corfe Castle. The event was a huge success and gradually with more events over the years, this led to the birth of the Purbeck Film Festival and the formation of the charity.

WHAT’S ON – 2021

The Purbeck Film Festival holds events throughout the year.

Our popular summer outdoor cinema screenings in August at Durlston Castle and Holme for Gardens have been a great success

and we look forward to announcing more dates for 2022 outdoor events in our Silver Anniversary year, in the coming weeks.

SUBMIT YOUR FILMS TODAY - Purbeck Shorts Competition

The Purbeck Shorts is the Purbeck Film Festival’s nail-biting Short Film Competition which takes place every October as part of our main event. We accept films in many genres and styles but the duration must be 10 minutes or less to qualify.
Our competition gives the filmmakers of tomorrow an opportunity to share their work on the big screen with an audience, and win cash prizes!
Our call for entries is now open and the final Competition night will take place at the Mowlem Theatre in Swanage on Friday, 29 October.
Films that are submitted are viewed by a preliminary judging panel and their finalists are then chosen for the screening event. The films are judged on this evening and the winners announced. The panel of Judges will be revealed here soon!

OUR SCREENINGS

In addition to the main Purbeck Film Festival each autumn, the Purbeck Film Festival collaborates with partners and organisations throughout the year organising screenings for charity events, supporting film groups, running our open air cinemas in August and working with INTO Film Festival to bring free films to cinemas for schools in the autumn. Look out for news of our other special events to be announced soon

OPEN AIR CINEMA

Our outdoor season of screenings has now finished but we are lining up lots of exciting events to share with you next year and will announce these shortly. The success of screenings at Durlston’s Aviary Glade has prompted us to look at a future programme at this venue, and we are also planning next year’s event at the beautiful Holme for Gardens Outdoor Amphitheatre. Thank you to everyone who supported us at our outdoor screenings, your support is so valuable to us.
